Alcune discipline, più che altre, ben si prestano al processo di Internazionalizzazione degli Atenei italiani e, più in particolare, del Politecnico di Milano. È questo il caso del Design, riconosciuto internazionalmente come espressione caratterizzante della cultura italiana. Il Politecnico di Milano registra annualmente un crescente interesse da parte di studenti internazionali per una formazione universitaria di design. Analogamente, molti studenti italiani, iscritti alla Scuola del Design, manifestano ogni anno l'interesse ad arricchire il proprio curriculum didattico di esperienze di tipo internazionale (mobilità, tirocini all'estero, partecipazione a workshop con università straniere, ecc.), consci dell'importanza di integrare le proprie attività formative con esperienze maturate oltre i confini nazionali.

È nell'ambito di tale quadro, caratterizzato da una mobilità sempre crescente degli studenti nel mondo e dal riconoscimento del ruolo significativo ricoperto da Milano nella cultura progettuale del design a livello internazionale, che ha preso avvio il progetto del corso di laurea magistrale denominato Product-Service System Design - Design del Sistema Prodotto Servizio, in lingua inglese, rivolto a studenti sia italiani che internazionali.

Rispondendo ai profondi cambiamenti in essere in ogni sfera che modificano in modo significativo anche i processi di formazione, il corso recepisce le opportunità progettuali che derivano dalle sempre più urgenti istanze ambientali e sociali, dai processi di globalizzazione e dalla competizione crescente in un mercato ampio e interconnesso, dalle nuove tecnologie, dall'emergere di nuovi modi di vivere e paradigmi di consumo che richiedono ai designer una rinnovata capacità di pensare, creare ed offrire soluzioni complesse.

Il corso, di conseguenza, offre ai partecipanti la possibilità di sviluppare una visione olistica e integrata della progettazione, attraverso un percorso interdisciplinare svolto in un contesto multiculturale.

Un “sistema prodotto servizio” è un insieme integrato di prodotti, servizi, spazi, artefatti comunicativi e strategie capace di offrire soluzioni organiche ed etiche a domande complesse. Un sistema con al centro le persone (utilizzatori, fornitori, operatori o portatori d'interesse in generale) che interagiscono per produrre un risultato che risponde ad una visione condivisa.

Il percorso di studi di due anni mira a formare un professionista in grado di relazionarsi a questo insieme in modo progettuale, individuando opportunità e sviluppando soluzioni creative, impostando un progetto secondo una metodologia che spazia dalla ricerca etnografica al posizionamento strategico, lavorando in team multidisciplinari e sviluppando le proprie capacità di leadership, l'autoimprenditorialità e, in generale, la pro-attività all'interno della società.

Il Corso di laurea magistrale in Product-Service System Design offre inoltre, a un numero selezionato di studenti eccellenti, accesso a diverse opportunità internazionali, tra cui spicca la doppia laurea con la Tongji University di Shanghai (programma PoliTong). Infine, dall'anno accademico 2014-15, ha attivato il corso di doppia laurea in “Product-Service System Design and Management Engineering” che ha l'obiettivo di sviluppare nei selezionati partecipanti la capacità di concepire business model innovativi e di guidare e implementare processi di sviluppo che coinvolgano diversi attori del sistema d'impresa.
