Scheda dell'insegnamento

Obiettivi formativi

On the basis of the learning of the proposed solutions and technologies the student will be able to evaluate the impact load that is originated from a specific human activity, and to fix the instruments that must be adopted for the containment, by considering performances, applicability, project criteria, costs, results. The knowledges that must be acquired are directed to the definition of a multi-disciplinar approach to the establishment of solutions for impact limitation, by evaluating for the different tools that could be considered the best use in a perspective of integrated resolution.

Programma

Object of the course is the description of the systems that, by using characteristic methodologies of an engineer approach, are able to lead to the environmental sustainability of human processes: on the basis of the knowledge of the origin of the phenomena that must be regulated and also of the evaluation of the tools that can be used, the different solutions able to lead to a containment of impact are presented. In particular the intervention technologies for primary waters and wastewater, for residuals treatment, for limitation of emissions are presented. Also different approaches useful for environmental protection are introduced, with reference to the adoption of prevention policies, the use of economic and financial tools, the fixation of rules. The course is a part of a whole formation way, that is directed to evaluate the possibilities for the technological control of the quality of the environment and the right use of the resources, with particular focus on process and plant aspects.

Economic and normative tools for the realisation of limitation solutions Clean technologies, modification of industrial processes, intervention on raw materials and on the employed resources. Physical, biological and chemical processes applied to solid, liquid and gaseous residues Formation of urban solid wastes, prevention, different collection systems, reuse and recycle Treatment of urban solid wastes: separations, composting, anaerobic digestion, thermal utilisation, landfill Treatment of industrial wastes, valorisation, destruction, segregation Principles for atmospheric emissions limitation, planning solutions, scenarios for modification of processes and plants Global water cycle Selection of primary sources, characteristics for water supply Primary water treatment: aeration, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, adsorption, chemical treatments Hypothesis for reuse and recycle for non-drinking water Treatment of wastewater: physical, physico-chemical, chemical, thermal operations Generation of residuals and sludges in primary and waste waters Principles and operating conditions for biological oxidation and nutrients removal Generation, treatment and final destination for sludges deriving from biological operations

... In order to verify the apprehension of the presented arguments and the capacity to arrive to practical applications, a traditional exam in written and oral form is used. In general to the student in the written exam two main arguments are proposed, and as concerns these arguments some questions concerning theoretical basis for the technologies or possibilities of application are asked in order to verify the maturity level that from the student has been obtained. The written exam lasts 75 minutes and the maximum mark is 30. The oral is facultative and consists in one question on the topics examined during the lessons. By means of the oral it is possible to add/decrease until 3 points. The final mark takes into account also the group works performed during the lesson period. An excellent judgement in the group work may add until 2 points to the final mark. Without the existence of the group work it is not possible to give the exam. The final evaluation is based on the apprehension capacity that has been demonstrated, on the quality of presentation, on the demonstration of the acquired capacity to apply to specific practical cases the general indications that are introduced.

Testi di riferimento

In account of the quite low complexity of the arguments that are introduced during the course, and from the other side by considering the high application meaning and the constant technological evolution of the presented schemes, it doesn’t seem convenient to indicate a specific textbook, able to be a specific reference basis for the exam preparation. In order to know more, for all the presented arguments there is a very large bibliography, with different level of deepening and different treated arguments; this bibliography can be suggested to the students for an higher comprehension or a more extended analysis of the arguments that are introduced during the lessons or the exercises.

Scheda dell'insegnamento

Obiettivi formativi

The student will be able to define and obtain the main geomechanical properties of a rock material and of a rock mass as well. These elements contribute to understand the behavior of rock masses and materials: behaviour and technology are fundamental for the solution of the practical problems in the geoengineering field, aspect that is also developed in the course. The main competence for the student will therefore be related to stability assessment in the excavation engineering problems.

Programma

The course represents a link between the rock mechanics fundamentals and the rock engineering application. The course is based on the characterisation of rock materials and masses and on the solution of some typical conditions for surface-underground excavations, while the monitoring of natural - artificial structures is presented as a part of the design methodology in geomechanics. The content of the lessons represents a useful basis for other engineering oriented courses such as Tunnelling, Rock and soil reinforcing, Mining methods, Underground excavations, Landslides and slope stability.

Fundamentals of elasticity in rock mechanics; stress and strain. Rock materials and rock masses. Geotechnical characterization in lab and in field. Strength criteria and behavior of rock materials. The aim of the course is to supply the correct elements in order to evaluate the effectiveness and the applicability of the actions in order to limit the magnitude or rate of long – term global warming and its related effects.

Programma

Climate Change Mitigation refers to efforts to reduce or prevent emission of greenhouse gases. Mitigation can mean using new technologies and renewable energies, making older equipment more energy efficient, or changing management practices or consumer behavior.

The issue of climate change mitigation is treated under policy and technological perspectives. The course is organized into three main modules: A) Greenhouse gas emissions (classes: 12 h) Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere are called greenhouse gases. This module provides information on emissions inventories and relations between emissions and concentrations of the main greenhouse gases. The following topics will be addressed: o Emissions inventories from the different economic sectors (energy, transports, agriculture, building, etc.) o Relations between emissions and CO2 concentration B) Policy initiatives toward climate change mitigation (classes: 15 h) In pursuing the objectives of climate change mitigation, governments around the world have adopted policies and measuree to reduce their emissions of GHGs. This module shows the main policies adopted. The following topics will be addressed: o The UNFCCC, the IPCC, the Kyoto protocol and the Paris Agreement o Climate Change mitigation policies in selected OECD countries – Trade and Development implications for developing countries o GHG Minimization through circular economy initiatives (MSW recovery and reuse, mobility sector, food sector, built environment) C) Technology-based climate change mitigation (classes: 20 h, lab activities: 13 h) In this module technologies that have the potential to make significant contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions are analized. In some cases they offer the only known way to reduce emissions in a given sector. The following topics will be addressed: o Analysis of the GHG Minimization Technologies (industrial sector, advanced biofuel supply, energy storage) o GHG Minimization Technologies: case studies (concerning the MSW management, the energy planning and the quantification of carbon and water footprint) and lab activities (analysis of the CO2 reduction using micro – algae realized in the Laboratorio biologico - DIATI 3) o Analysis of the most consolidated Negative Emissions Technologies (Direct Air Capture, Lime-Soda process, Biochar, CCS, BECCS, etc) and evaluation of the environmental compatibility (with tool such as mass and energy balance, LCA, performance index, etc) o Analysis of the possible GHG minimization with the use of recycled material instead to the natural resources (using the tool of the LCA) o Analysis of the possible GHG minimization with the water reuse. Wastewater treatment/water potabilization: evaluation of the treatment modifications as a function of the climate change o Evaluation of Joint technique for reduce primary pollutants and GHG emissions

Programma

The aim of the course is to introduce and describe some basic Geomatics techniques for data acquisition and the methodologies in order to develop basic understanding of spatially referenced data analysis and to explore the potential of Geographic Information Systems application in environmental and social studies. The course builds up on the practical skills related to climate change, geospatial data mining and mapping. It also offers more detailed discussion and wider range of geospatial data visualization methods and introduces quantitative analysis of geospatial phenomena. Besides, the course aims at providing both a theoretical understanding and a practical introduction to the use of Geomatics technologies for monitoring and analysis of environmental problems. Students are exposed to the basic techniques and practical skills of extracting relevant information also from digital imagery. Educational Approach: The course consists of computer class-based instructor presentations, supervised in-class exercises, individual consultations and a major individual term project. The course is based on "learn-by-doing" approach: basic approaches and principles presented by instructors during laboratory-based classes will be accompanied by students' extensive individual work. Some outdoor activities will be carried out for improving the practical skill of the students and for applying what they have studied during the lessons.

The program is divided into 5 modules of lectures, for a total duration of 60 hours, and a series of laboratories and outdoor activities. DELIVERY MODES Lessons (30 h): Module 1: How to represent and collect data. The importance of reference systems and why is important to select a proper reference system will be described in order to perform correct analyses from spatial data. Some different Geomatics techniques will be described as possible methods to collect data in a direct way or for extracting secondary information (e.g. the precipitable water vapour from GNSS measurements). Module 2: Basic concepts of theory of observations Definitions of basic concepts on measurement and estimation of a random 1D/2D variable, mean, median, standard deviation, probability density function (PDF), cumulative density function (CDF). In this module, some aspects about the measurement of real objects and statistical interpretation are considered. Moreover, it will focused the attention on correlation, accuracy and precision concepts. Module 3: The interpolation/approximation methods The interpolation methods play a crucial role in environmental spatial analysis. Different interpolation techniques such as IDW, correlogram, variogram, different Kriging (simple, universal, linear, co-Kriging) methods will be deeply analyzed and considered, focusing the attention on different kinds of applications especially related to petroleum and hydrological activities. Module 4: Data visualization and interpretation Basic concepts related to GIS/database Design procedure will be provided. The modelling procedure, external model, conceptual model (Entity/Relationship), logical model (Relational DB), internal model, cardinality, basic rules for data modelling (complex attributes, multi-values fields), 3D GIS support and visualization Digital Terrain model and digital Surface model Definition of DTM and DSM, contents (point cloud, breaklines, dead zone, …), dense model, irregular (TIN) and regular grids, estimation of surface parameters (slope, aspect, contour lines, curvature,…), visibility analysis (line of sight, skyline, viewshade, observer, …) Module 5: Filtering, model building and inversion techniques. In this module, different filtering techniques (e.g. low-pass/high pass filter) and inverse problems will be considered, especially considering hydraulic and petroleum applications. During geological modelling, for instance, it is frequent the use of filtering techniques on well log data in order to identify characteristics of the log electrical signals, improve stratigraphic correlation or remove unwanted parts of the registration. On 2D or 3D datasets (e.g. maps, distributed petrophysical values) filters can be applied in order to identify the contribution of each spatial component of a given property, remove/enhance property features or calculate trends used during petrophysical distribution. During the lesson different filtering techniques are going to be presented and analyzed that are commonly used during well data analysis and 3D geological modelling. Lab activities (30 h): The lab activities take about half of the course and are focused on themes considered during the lessons. Specific applications will be done using Geomatics and GIS software especially for geospatial analysis, focusing on analysis tools, 3D data, working with rasters, projections, and environment variables. The works are carried out in team; finally, a special report must be completed.

Modalità d'esame

Modalita di esame: Prova orale obbligatoria; Elaborato scritto prodotto in gruppo;
Exam: Compulsory oral exam; Group essay;
... The exam consists of 3 parts: 1. a discussion of exercises on the entire process of environmental spatial analysis with theoretical subjects (vote/30) 2. a discussion of exercises on hydraulic problems made during practical activities (vote/30) 3. a discussion of exercises on petroleum engineering made during practical activities (vote/30). Scheda dell'insegnamento

Obiettivi formativi

The acquisition of technical skills to perform excavation works in different contexts (open pit, underground, underwater construction sites) is expected, aimed to critically examine the choice of the equipment and the best methods to perform a given work, respecting the constraints and minimizing the environmental pressures. The topics treated have the aim to stimulate research for the best solution among those potentially detectable, based on the criticism of the context. It therefore intends to encourage the independence and the learning ability, stimulating the discussion: the right answers are sometimes more than one, and the discussion is fundamental. Students will be then invited to write technical reports on the cases presented during the lectures, to take a reasoned decision, to estimate the orders of magnitude of the numerical values that the engineer has to manage in the main reference cases, to understand the international terminology.

Obiettivi formativi

At the end of the course, students will be expected to: - Knowing and understanding the nature of the physical, physico-chemical and chemical mechanisms that determine the fate of a pollutant after it has been emitted from a source, and along its movement in some environmental systems (atmosphere, surface water bodies, soils and aquifer) . - Knowing and understanding the foundations, potentials, and limitations of the main engineering methodologies and models applied to describe and predict the fate of pollutants. - Analyzing and interpreting the results of engineering methodologies and models for the correct evaluation of their appropriateness and correlating the modeling results with the relevant environmental phenomena. Furthermore, with the aim of fostering the autonomy, scientific soundness, and creativity needed in their future professional life, students are expected to: - Evaluating and applying the conceptual and numerical tools to quantify the transport and concentrations of pollutants introduced into some environmental systems, finding a balance between the complexity of the description and the simplicity of manipulation (balance between information and meaning). - Applying the acquired knowledge to select, compare, dismiss, and verify the engineering methodologies and models for forecasting the distribution of pollutants. - Applying the acquired knowledge to solve practical problems related to the behavior of pollutants introduced into realistic environmental systems.

Programma

Anthropogenic emissions, especially from industrial sources, contain pollutants that can alter the equilibrium of the recipient environmental systems, and can represent a risk for the health of humans and ecosystems. The pollutants released into the environment are subjected to transport and transformation mechanisms that influence their fate and distribution. Consistently with the objectives of the Degree Course and in the context of environmental protection and industrial sustainability, this course aims to describe the set of phenomena that determine the fate of pollutants released into different environmental systems (atmosphere, water resources, soils), in order to be able to predict their concentrations and, consequently, the quality of such environmental systems. Particular attention is paid to the understanding of the physical foundation of the engineering models that are frequently used in the evaluation of the transport and transformation of pollutants, in order to be able to use such models with awareness. Alongside the theoretical lectures, these models are applied to solve problems on realistic domain and in problem solving activities, similar to those that will be addressed in the context of professional work.

The course is divided into 4 modules: - Module 1 (about 12 h, including 1 exercise): Flow in ideal and non-ideal reactors used for modeling environmental systems. Reaction and transformation kinetics of substances in ideal and non-ideal reactors. Use of ideal reactors for modeling non-ideal reactors and environmental systems. Approximation of environmental systems with ideal and non-ideal reactors. - Module 2 (about 30-35 h, including 2 exercises): Elements of atmospheric mechanics and hydraulics at the local scale, dynamics of the earth's boundary layer, plume shape. Diffusion and transport of pollutants in the atmosphere, modeling and representation at different spatial and temporal scales. Atmospheric acidity, aerosol formation, dry and wet fallout phenomena. Examples of chemical phenomena of transformation in the troposphere and stratosphere. - Module 3 (about 20-25 hours, including 2 exercises): Basic notions of aquifer engineering: storage and transport capacity of an aquifer, Darcy's law. Solutions of the differential flow equation: confined, semi-confined and unconfined aquifers. Mechanisms of propagation of pollutants in groundwater: advection, hydrodynamic dispersion, adsorption, radioactive decay, biodegradation, other processes. Analytical solutions of the mass transport differential equation. Behavior of pollutants in the unsaturated (vadose) zone. - Module 4 (about 15 h, including + 1 exercise): Dynamics of pollutants introduced into surface water bodies: physical, hydraulic, chemical and biological phenomena. Dissolved oxygen and Streeter-Phelps model in rivers. Dynamics of mixing in lakes and eutrophication.

Programma

Applied GeophysicsThe course focus on the theoretical background of geophysical methods applied to civil and environmental engineering and in study of snow/glacier and permafrost in alpine areas. The course aims to illustrate the data acquisition and interpretation methods of the geophysical parameters.Remote sensingThe course Remote Sensing aims to provide students in Environmental Engineering with a solid theoretical and practical foundation in the principles of remote sensing, focusing on the physical fundamentals, data acquisition systems, and processing techniques of remotely sensed data collected from aerial and satellite platforms. Particular attention is given to the use of multispectral optical remote sensing, especially from freely available satellite data at medium spatial resolution, which is particularly useful for environmental monitoring and analysis at landscape and territorial scales. The course is designed to equip students with key skills for interpreting Earth observation data and applying them to environmental challenges. An innovative teaching model is adopted: instead of synchronous, in-person software exercises, students will follow an asynchronous learning path supported by video lectures, the ENVI software (made available individually), datasets, and structured activities delivered through Moodle. Students will be able to practice and consolidate their skills at their own pace, with the possibility of repeating modules as needed. Throughout the course, mentors will provide support both asynchronously and, when required, through live sessions to help students solve technical problems and clarify methodological aspects. After the asynchronous phase, the course will culminate in an intensive specialist seminar dedicated to an advanced application of remote sensing. Risultati attesi

Obiettivi formativi

Modalita di esame: Prova orale obbligatoria; Elaborato progettuale in gruppo;
Exam: Compulsory oral exam; Group project;
The students will acquire knowledge of physical processes and technical aspects which are expected to be mostly impacted by climate change. They will also become familiar with official documents, such as those produced by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the relevant up-to-date scientific literature. Students will practice data analysis, spatial analysis, statistical modelling. They will learn to master software and modelling tools for the assessment of impacts and future projections. They will become familiar with air quality indicators and pollution sources, with non-conventional uses of the underground spaces. Students will learn to quantify changes in river flows, to produce basic risk maps, to manage scarce water resources, to design engineering systems to protect the people and the environment.

Programma

Climate change is expected to impact a wide range of natural processes and anthropic activities. Modifications in the atmospheric and earth energy balance, as well as in the water cycle, will likely change the spatial and temporal availability of natural resources, worsen extreme events, impact the environment, challenge food production and urban areas. Most changes will perturb equilibria and exacerbate criticalities and will require societal and technological adaptation. However, evolving situations may also open new opportunities and trigger changes with positive fallouts, that adaptations are expected to consider and capture. The course will illustrate a range of adaptation strategies for the natural and the built environment, to cope with environmental changes and plan anthropic interventions. The course will focusing on different contexts. In each context the processes and governing principles will be illustrated, the changing features will be analyzed, the environmental and socio-economic aspects will be presented and the adaptation solutions will be discussed. Feasibility, efficiency, sustainability of the solutions will also be assessed by socio-economic and environmental points of view. The course will have a quantitative approach and will propose student activities based on data collection and analysis, use of software and modelling tools, analysis of real case studies and possibly some field trips.

Programma

Modalita di esame: Prova scritta (in aula); Elaborato progettuale in gruppo;
Exam: Written test; Group project;
Obiettivi formativi

The main goal of the program is to provide to the students the skill to identify the best procedures and tool for the correct design of a tunnel, to set up a correct risk analysis, to make the choices for the job site management and to be able to develop the design of the first phase lining The knowledge of the technological aspects of most used full face tunnel machines and their working procedures are another skill that will be provided with the course. The student should become able to: - analyse multidisciplinary problems that requires the skills and abilities developed in the disciplines of applied geology, rock mechanics, structural design and to become to apply these abilities to the specific sector of tunnel construction; - to follow and understand a technical speech in English and know the international terminology of the tunnel sector; - to develop and write a technical report; - to take design decision by motivating them; - to evaluate quickly the order of magnitude of the variables and parameters that the engineer should have do deal with when designing a tunnelling or managing a tunnel job site. These skills and abilities will be provided with the class lessons but also with the technical visits and with the analysis of some relevant case histories.

Programma

The lectures will provide the fundamental information on the design and technical aspects related to tunnel construction taking into account: the excavation process conventional an mechanized, the stability of voids, the installation, choice and design of linings (both firth phase and final) and the job site managements. The lessons will deal in detail with the design of tunnel with the final goal to construct the works in safety conditions both of the job site, the tunnel surrounding and the surface. Based on the principles of rock mechanics and rock engineering the stability aspects of the underground are analysed and the calculation procedures are presented. The specific ground reinforcing techniques and the structural design procedures of tunnel lining are presented. The excavation methods both for conventional and mechanized tunnelling are analysed and discussed. Due to the natural heterogeneity both lithological and structural of the rock masses and their variable behaviour with reference under different overburden, the tools and methods for monitoring are presented and discussed to clarify their use in the design flow procedure and to explain how to use them for a correct check of the design hypothesis. The program is developed both with class lectures and exercises, discussion of case histories, and with technical visits to tunnel job sites if available during the lesson period.

Obiettivi formativi

98 D.Lgs 9/4/08 n.81 e s.m.i.).

Programma

98 D.Lgs 9-4-08 n.81 e s.m.i.
