After attending the course (theoretical lessons and practical activities), the student will know about the applications of minerals, in particular:
General knowledge of the mineral groups, their classification and applications.
Detailed knowledge of some mineral groups and their applications.
Comprehension of the relationships between theoretical concepts of crystallography and diffraction and minerals behavior.
Applying knowledge and understanding:
Basic knowledge about minerals and mineral-like materials must be applied to medicine, environmental remediation, and industry .
During the laboratory sessions, synthesis and characterization of some materials-related mineral phases will be carried out and characterized mainly by X-ray diffraction, imaging, elemental, and, eventually, surface analysis.

Introduction: why study minerals and mineral-like materials in Materials Science?
Descriptive mineralogy (to level the language).
Notes on crystal growth (to level the language).
Minerals for the environmental remediation: water, air, and soil contamination. Minerals as solid-state storage media for critical elements and pollutants.
Biominerals and biomimetic materials: Medical applications (osteoinduction and osteoconduction). Pathologic mineralization. Some case studies (fluorosis, rheumatoid arthritis, calcifications, and carcinoma-related mineralizations). Amorphous materials and their role in biomineralization. Mimicking nature (functional organic crystals in biologic crystallization)
Minerals for industrial applications: ceramics, cement, high-tech.
Notes on Geopolymers.
Laboratory: synthesis of some mineral-like materials
The written test is mandatory and consists of five questions about the topics covered during the classes and the laboratory. Every perfect answer is worth 6 points, while every wrong or missing answer is worth 0 points. Students will prepare short individual lab reports during the laboratory sessions, and lab reports must be delivered to the teacher at least 5 days before the written test date. No report will correspond to a lowered mark of 3 points. Lab reports will raise the final evaluation of 2 points as the maximum.
Students willing to improve their final evaluation must take the oral exam. The oral exam is not mandatory and does not guarantee a better score in the end. Students will take the oral exam in the same session as the written test. Students will accept or reject their marks by the end of the oral session.
Research articles provided by the teacher during the course .
