- società di ingegneria, come addetti alla progettazione, supervisione, costruzione di impianti produttivi industriali;
- centri di ricerca pubblici e privati, come addetti e/o coordinatori di attività di ricerca e sviluppo;
- aziende appartenenti all'industria di trasformazione della materia (chimica propriamente detta, petrolifera e petrolchimica, metallurgica, farmaceutica, alimentare, ecc.), per la gestione e supervisione degli impianti produttivi;
- aziende di produzione, come addetti o responsabili dei settori qualità, ambiente e sicurezza;
- società di servizi e nella pubblica amministrazione, come coordinamento tecnico;
- attività di libera professione e consulenza specialistica in favore di aziende e gruppi che non dispongono in proprio di specifiche competenze;

1. Aritmetica del calcolatore (4 ore). Richiami sui concetti base. Condizionamento di un problema numerico. Stabilità di un algoritmo. 2. Sistemi lineari (12 ore). Richiami sui metodi diretti e sulle fattorizzazioni di matrici. Metodi iterativi: Jacobi, Gauss-Seidel, gradiente e gradiente coniugato.

Exam: Computer lab-based test; Written test; Individual essay;

Scheda dell'insegnamento
Obiettivi formativi
The course is located at the end of the study paths of Chemical, Environment and Land and/or Energy Engineering students and has the ambition to provide some notions on the industrial processes of CO2 treatment in order to obtain products for consumers or to realize its storage. However, the main result that we intend to pursue is not exclusively related to the acquisition of these skills, but also to provide an alternative point of view on the possibility of re-activating the carbon dioxide molecule in the natural carbon cycle. The lessons present problems and examples of practical nature that follow the brief basic notions illustrated; in such problems, the engineering approach that recalls wide-ranging skills that the student is supposed to possess must be used to give precise answers on the practical feasibility of the analyzed process solutions. By attending the course, the student must acquire: - knowledge of the nature and chemistry of the natural carbon cycle on the planet; - the peculiar properties of the CO2 molecule and the consequent poor chemical reactivity; - the carbon dioxide capture processes; - the possibility of chemical reactivation through the use of renewable energy and H2 as an energy vector; - the possibility of CO2 entrapment in “end-of-life compounds, such as carbonates.
Programma
The course covers an emerging field of modern process engineering, both environmental and chemical, based on the most competitive process alternatives for the conversion of carbon dioxide into products that are easy to consume or simple to store. The lectures aim to give an overview of the innovative processes currently used or in an advanced stage of technological development for the "sustainable" exploitation of natural resources and renewable energy that can activate the CO2 molecule.
The carbon cycle: the transfer of CO2 between the different sources and geological deposits on a planetary level is characterized by natural and anthropogenic dynamics. The relative kinetics of the various phenomena is the main reason for concern by the scientific community, in relation to the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere of our planet. The main greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide. Plant sources (industrial and biogenic) and measurement methods. Relationship between polluting gases and greenhouse gases. CO2 sequestration: the CO2 capture processes are divided into absorption and adsorption, which differ in the capture phase (liquid or solid, respectively). The choice between the two systems is made based on the streams containing the CO2, in terms of flow rate, composition, operating conditions, presence of contaminants, plant costs, environmental compatibility. Seizure will be treated for stationary applications, but the potential of mobile systems will also be explored. CO2 conversion processes: In this module, the different chemical and biological options of CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) or reuse (CCU) for the production of compounds and fuels will be developed. • Synthesis of urea: the urea synthesis process is an example of a classic process that has CO2 as its reagent. • Dry reforming: dry reforming represents a process of great interest as a transition stage between the use of fossil fuels (methane) and the reactivation of CO2, with the aim of producing CO, a key molecule for synthesis of carbon-based products of interest. • Conversion of CO2 into inorganic carbonates (carbonation of minerals and industrial residues) and organic ones: CO2 can be converted into chemical compounds, both as a long-term storage strategy (in deposits, through the carbonation of minerals) and medium term (for the production of consumer products): among the latter, there are inorganic carbonates, such as calcium carbonate, which can be used as fillers for cementitious materials. Organic carbonates, on the other hand, are materials that can penetrate the plastics industry (polycarbonates), eliminating dangerous reagents such as phosgene. • Power-to-X chemical and biological processes: in these processes the activation of CO2 derives from reductive processes using hydrogen, obtained from renewable sources by electrolysis of water / steam and / or co-electrolysis of steam and CO2. The multiplicity of CO2 reduction products (collectively referred to as X) includes a broad spectrum of compounds: methane, methanol, di-methyl-ether, short-chain olefins (for the plastics sector) and medium ones (for chemistry), liquid hydrocarbons (covering the similar oil cuts of gasoline, kerosene up to diesel). The reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbon products can take place indirectly (conversion of CO2 to CO and subsequent hydrogenation of CO according to consolidated processes) or directly in the chemical or biological reactor (conversion of CO2 to final products). In this context, the reaction intermediates follow mechanisms similar to the Fischer-Tropsch process or the production of methanol, depending on the catalytic system. • Photo-catalytic processes: in these processes the activation of CO2 occurs by radiation. The fundamentals of radiation absorption and the systems for coupling with the catalytic system will be described. • Electro-catalytic processes: in these processes, CO2 is converted into final products, without the intermediation of H2 in gaseous form. The engineering of electrochemical systems to achieve this reduction will be described. • Photo-synthetic processes: in these processes, CO2 is converted into microalgae by the action of light. Depending on the type of migroalgae grown, the final use of biomass is different: nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, chemicals are some examples. Process environmental sustainability: the process calculations relating to the different CO2 reactivation approaches will be functional to estimate its competitiveness compared to existing processes, as well as energy and environmental sustainability.
Modalità d'esame
Modalita di esame: Prova scritta (in aula); Prova scritta in aula tramite PC con l'utilizzo della piattaforma di ateneo;
Exam: Written test; Computer-based written test in class using POLITO platform;
... Theoretical questions and numerical exercises will be asked. Theoretical open- and closed-ended questions and exercises to be performed in the Exam platform, using personal laptos brought by the students the day of the exam, in physical presence.

Modalita di esame: Prova orale obbligatoria; Elaborato progettuale in gruppo;
Exam: Compulsory oral exam; Group project;

Modalita di esame: Prova orale obbligatoria;
Exam: Compulsory oral exam;

Modalita di esame: Prova scritta (in aula); Prova orale facoltativa; Prova pratica di laboratorio;
Exam: Written test; Optional oral exam; Practical lab skills test;
... The exam consists of two parts: a written test (numerical exercises) and an oral test (theory). The written test lasts 1.5 hours and includes two exercises, one for each module of the course. The type and complexity of the exercises are similar to those covered during class tutorials. Consultation of notes or any external material is not permitted during the written test, except for a single A3 sheet prepared by the student, containing formulas. The oral test will be scheduled according to a calendar published within one day after the written exam. It consists of one question on theoretical topics. To be admitted to the oral test, the student must obtain a score of at least 18/30 in both written exercises. During the oral test, students are required to bring a printed report of the experimental lab activity on strain measurement in pressure vessels. This report will be discussed with the professor, and up to 2 bonus points may be awarded and added to the average score (written + oral) of the Structural Mechanics module. At the end of the oral test, a score will be assigned for each module, based on the results of both the written and oral tests. The exam is considered passed only if the student obtains a grade of at least 18/30 in both the written and the oral tests. The final grade is calculated as the average of the scores obtained in the two modules. The written test is intended to assess the ability to solve practical problems involving material properties, failure mechanisms, and load-bearing models, reflecting real-world applications. The oral test evaluates the student's ability to reason beyond standard exercises, particularly in handling analytical models describing the behavior of materials and structures under operating conditions. This includes both the understanding of model assumptions and their application to case studies.

Transport phenomena and computational fluid dynamics (Computational fluid dynamics)This course provides an introduction to the principles and applications of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with a focus on chemical engineering processes. Students will learn the fundamental mathematical models governing fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transport, and how these models are discretized and solved using numerical methods. The course covers the formulation of governing equations, turbulence modeling, and multiphase flow simulation, emphasizing practical applications in chemical reactors, separation processes, and transport phenomena. Hands-on exercises using widely used CFD software allow students to develop skills in setting up, running, and interpreting simulations relevant to chemical engineering problems.Transport phenomena and computational fluid dynamics (Transport phenomena)This course introduces advanced concepts of molecular transport phenomena, which refer to the processes by which mass, momentum, and energy are transferred at the molecular level in a physical system. These phenomena arise due to molecular motion and interactions, and they form the basis of many macroscopic transport processes in fluids and solids. There are three primary types of molecular transport phenomena: 1. Momentum transport – also known as viscous flow or momentum diffusion. - Caused by molecular motion transmitting momentum from one part of a fluid to another. - Described by Newton’s law of viscosity, which relates shear stress to the velocity gradient in a fluid. 2. Mass transport – also called diffusion. - Refers to the movement of individual molecules from regions of high concentration to regions of low concentration. - Governed by Fick’s laws of diffusion. 3. Energy transport – or thermal conduction. - Involves the transfer of kinetic energy between molecules, resulting in heat flow from high to low temperature regions. - Described by Fourier’s law of heat conduction. Together, these transport mechanisms are described mathematically by partial differential equations derived from the conservation laws (mass, momentum, and energy), often forming the foundation of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and mass transfer analyses in chemical engineering.

... Transport phenomena and computational fluid dynamics (Computational fluid dynamics)At the beginning of the course, students are divided into groups of five and assigned a design project to be solved using CFD tools. Each group is guided throughout the semester in the development and implementation of their project, which involves applying the concepts and methods learned during the course to a realistic chemical engineering problem. At the end of the course, each group delivers a 30-minute PowerPoint presentation summarizing their work. The presentation is followed by a question-and-answer session, during which students are expected to discuss their results and demonstrate a solid understanding of both their specific project and the general CFD principles covered in the course. Despite group work, the final grade is assigned individually, based on individual performance.Transport phenomena and computational fluid dynamics (Transport phenomena)The exam consists of a mandatory written test with 3 exercises: one on momentum transport, one on energy transport and one on mass transport. This weights for 24 out of 30 scores. During the semester the students can take part to an eligible crowdgrading test. Three exercises are given to the students, which then upload them into a crowdgrader platform. The exercises are then graded anonymously by three other students, randomly selected by the platform. This weights 6 out of 30 scores. The students can then improve their grade with an eligible oral test covering all the topics of the course. During the oral test the students are asked to solve simple numerical problems or undergo theoretical derivations.

Programma
This course introduces the fundamental concepts of data-driven modelling and modern machine learning, with a specific focus on applications in process monitoring, surrogate modelling, and optimization for chemical engineering. Starting from data preprocessing and classical machine learning methods, the course progresses through neural network architectures — including convolutional neural networks — to the construction of surrogate models that can replace expensive numerical simulations. Students learn how to train, evaluate, and deploy ML models for engineering tasks such as process monitoring, anomaly detection, and design optimization. The course bridges the gap between the physics-based modelling students have encountered in earlier courses (transport phenomena, CFD) and modern data-driven approaches. A distinctive feature is the emphasis on surrogate modelling and ML-based optimization: students learn not only to build predictive models, but also to use trained surrogates as fast, differentiable proxies for simulation-based design and optimization. The course includes computer laboratory sessions with Python (NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch) and a hands-on team project involving the deployment of a trained ML model on physical hardware.
Data-driven modelling: datasets, preprocessing, feature engineering, training/validation/testing, bias-variance tradeoff, cross-validation. Classical machine learning methods: linear and nonlinear regression, regularization (Ridge, Lasso), logistic regression, decision trees, random forests, ensemble methods, support vector machines. Dimensionality reduction and latent-variable methods: PCA, PLS, and their application to process monitoring and fault detection (Hotelling's T², SPE statistics, contribution plots). Neural networks: fully connected architectures, activation functions, backpropagation, gradient descent and modern optimizers, regularization techniques (dropout, batch normalization). Convolutional neural networks (CNNs): convolution and pooling operations, feature maps, standard architectures, transfer learning. Application to image-based engineering data. Surrogate modelling: replacing expensive simulations (CFD, FEM) with trained neural networks. Dataset generation strategies, input/output design, accuracy evaluation. CNN surrogates for geometry-to-property prediction. ML for process monitoring and control: soft sensors, anomaly detection, fault classification. Data-driven models in model predictive control (MPC). Optimization with ML surrogates: gradient-based and gradient-free optimization, Bayesian optimization, optimizing through a differentiable surrogate, multi-objective optimization and Pareto fronts. Introduction to generative models: autoencoders, variational autoencoders (VAE), latent spaces, and the concept of inverse design. Practical project: deployment of a trained ML model on physical hardware (Arduino) for real-time inference, in small teams.

Applied physical chemistry (Physical chemistry of dispersed systems)The course is an introduction to the physical chemistry of finely dispersed systems. These systems are largely adopted in process engineering (environmental remediation, formulation chemistry, synthesis of pigments and catalysts) as well as in the production of different kinds of materials (biomaterials, ceramics, polymers and soft matter). The transformations in the dispersed state are strongly influenced by the high surface energy of the system and their study needs a peculiar approach, capable of linking information from the microscopic structure of the interface and the macroscopic global properties of the dispersion. The course begins with the macroscopic description of the interface provided by surface mechanics and thermodynamics, and subsequently moves towards the aspects related to the smallest scales: surface forces, charge separation and structure of interfaces. Finally, the modes of evolution of a disperse phase are examined and population balance method is introduced, as a tool to predict the dynamics of a disperse system.Applied physical chemistry (Statistical mechanics for chemical engineering)The first part of the course is an introduction to the physical chemistry of finely dispersed systems. After a recap on the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formalism and on wave mechanics some basic elements of quantum mechanics will be discussed. Simple examples, such as the particle-in-a-box model and the quantum harmonic oscillator, will be presented. Then the concepts of canonical ensemble and partition function will be introduced, together with the relationship of the most important thermodynamic quantities: internal energy, entropy, pressure, Helmholtz and Gibbs free energies and chemical potential. The course will conclude with the microscopic interpretation of thermodynamic principles and of chemical equilibrium. Practical hands-on sessions with a commercial (molecular dynamics) simulation suite are also foreseen.

Obiettivi formativi

Modalita di esame: Prova orale obbligatoria; Elaborato scritto individuale; Elaborato progettuale in gruppo;
Exam: Compulsory oral exam; Individual essay; Group project;

Modalita di esame: Prova scritta in aula tramite PC con l'utilizzo della piattaforma di ateneo;
Exam: Computer-based written test in class using POLITO platform;
