Law is a human creation to organize society, requiring mutual relationships and not just commands; it aims to prevent and resolve conflicts by defining rights and duties. Two factors of law's origin are organization and compliance with rules.
Laws can be descriptive (natural sciences) or prescriptive (rules governing behavior). There is a plurality of legal orders including international organizations, states, regions, cities, and private organizations.
Law can be public or private. Public law involves state authority to command, while private law regulates relationships between individuals without such power. Public powers include legislative, executive, and judicial functions with checks and balances to prevent despotism.
The democratic principle is based on the sovereignty of the people through direct or representative democracy. The rule of law ensures accountability of public powers and protects minorities from majority rule. Pluralism celebrates diversity in society, while the majority rule decides most issues but not unanimously.
