Di cosa parla

  • Nekton organisms, such as cephalopods, fish, mammals, seabirds, and sea turtles, are active swimmers in the water column.
  • Cephalopods like squids and octopuses have a unique structure including a powerful beak hidden between tentacles, a mantle for rapid movement, and well-developed eyes. They use ink to confuse predators and have specialized bones to control buoyancy.
  • Fishes are diverse in form and habitat; they can be classified into cartilaginous fishes (sharks, rays) and bony fishes (1000 species). Bony fishes show great diversity in locomotion types including acceleration specialists, cruising specialists, maneuvering specialists, and swimming mechanisms. Speed is related to body length, beat frequency, and aspect ratio of the caudal fin.
  • Fishes feed using suction, ram feeding, or suspension feeding. Suction involves creating negative pressure within the mouth, while ram feeders move towards prey with open jaws. Suspension feeders filter plankton from water using gill arches and rakers.
