Sin dalla sua concezione nel 1982, l'ingegnere gestionale è stato 'pensato’ come un ingegnere del cambiamento e dell'innovazione, simile in questo all'ingegnere classico a vocazione tecnologica e come l'ingegnere classico destinato ad "applicare in modo creativo principi e metodi scientifici alla progettazione e allo sviluppo di sistemi complessi". L’ingegnere gestionale opera in contesti la cui complessità deriva dalla stretta interazione tra variabili tecnologiche, economiche, finanziarie, umane, ed organizzative. L'ingegnere gestionale è stato 'pensato’ mutuando dalla realtà una figura professionale sviluppatasi naturalmente e già all'epoca estremamente diffusa - quella del cosiddetto ingegnere-manager - e traducendola in un curriculum universitario che è stato periodicamente innovato e arricchito in base alle mutevoli esigenze di aziende, organizzazioni e istituzioni che operano sia in Italia sia all’estero.

I circa 15.000 ingegneri gestionali laureatisi al Politecnico di Milano sono ormai ovunque, a testimonianza dell'accoglienza estremamente favorevole che il mercato ha riservato e continua a riservare a questa figura professionale. Essi sono fortemente presenti nelle imprese industriali, nelle imprese di servizi (telecomunicazioni, trasporti ecc.), nelle società di consulenza, nelle istituzioni finanziarie, nelle banche e nelle assicurazioni, nelle authority, nella pubblica amministrazione e nel non-profit. I nostri laureati operano in un ventaglio estremamente ampio di attività, fra cui ad esempio: la pianificazione della tecnologia e dei mezzi di produzione, la pianificazione e gestione dei sistemi produttivo-logistici, la pianificazione strategica e il marketing, il controllo di gestione e l'organizzazione, la regolamentazione della concorrenza e dei settori dei servizi a rete, i rapporti con le authority, la finanza dei mercati e la finanza aziendale, la gestione dei grandi progetti (impianti manifatturieri e di processo, infrastrutture, R&D), le applicazioni Internet e in generale nell'area delle tecnologie dell’informazione.
